Meeting-clip-artThis year, our school is in the first year of implementation of PBiS (Positive Behavior Instructional Supports), which is part of the Tacoma Whole Child Initiative. PBiS is a research-based system of supports that emphasized a proactive approach to defining, teaching and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create a school environment that promotes not just academic growth, but interpersonal skills, too. This year, our school has been focused on common areas in our school (hallways, cafeteria, bathrooms and playground) in establishing common expectations and language for kids. One of the most promising pieces of research with PBiS is how it not only supports kids’ social-emotional and behavioral learning, but there is a strong correlation between PBiS schools and increased academic achievement.

Want to know more about PBiS? Here are three ways to know more about this program.
1.  You can check out the PBiS website (http://www.pbis.org/). This website is filled with article, research, and tips. Be sure to check out the Family section of the website! (2) You can visit the TWCI website:(http://www.tacoma.k12.wa.us/information/departments/studentlife/pages/twci.aspx). This website has information and videos, specific to the work we are doing as a district.
3.  You can attend Tacoma’s first TWCI Showcase. On Tuesday, March 15, our district will be hosting a TWCI/PBiS event, to share with our community about the exciting and promising work our school are doing. Below, is an invitation from Dr. Garcia, TPS Deputy Superintendent, to this event, which our school will be represented, along with our sister schools. It’s going to be a great opportunity to not only share the work we are doing at Crescent Heights, but what we can also learn from our peers as well. We hope you can make it!
