This week, we are featuring one of our “original” CHE teachers – Ms. Laura Maes! Laura was a part of the staff that opened Crescent Heights in 1999! Here is more about this fun Kindergarten teacher!
What is your name, and what grade/specialty do you teach?
My name is Laura Maes, and I currently teach Kindergarten.
Tell us a bit about your family. Do you have pets?
My parents, both career educators, live in University Place and I see them often. I have one brother, who with his lovely wife has three boys. They are more like sons than nephews to me! I have a golden retriever called Raleigh.
What are your hobbies? What do you love to do outside of work?
I love hiking, snowshoeing and boating, growing flowers and tomatoes, spending time with friends and family, going to movies and playing games. Live theater and travel are my expensive vices!
How long have you been teaching, and how many years at Crescent Heights?
This is my 18th year at Crescent Heights, and my 30th year overall.
What is the funniest thing a student has ever done in your class?
I once overheard the following during the Pledge of Allegiance….”with liverty and jump ropes for all!” (All my other funnies are too naughty!) 🙂
If you weren’t a teacher, what else would you love to do for your career?
I would love to be a barista, work for REI as an outdoor instructor, be a docent in a National Park or be a tour guide. My sister in law and I dream of owning a bed and breakfast in the mountains.
Tell us one thing you’d love for the families of Crescent Heights to know about you.
I am grateful every day for the honor it is to be entrusted with your precious children. I take it very seriously.
