Teacher Tuesday Profile: Kelly Penswick

This week we are highlighting one our Para Educators, Kelly Penswick!  Here is Kelly’s story:

What is your name, and what grade/specialty do you teach?Kelly
Kelly Penswick, I am a Para educator and am part of the Student Support Team.

Tell us a bit about your family.  Do you have kids?  If so, what ages are they?  Do you have pets?
My husband Steve and I have 2 twin daughters that are in 5th grade at Crescent Heights; Anna and Mya. I am fortunate to see them throughout our day! Yes, we have a cat and a yellow lab Leo. He is 5 and we keep waiting for the day he settles down!

What are your hobbies?  What do you love to do outside of work?
I love spending time in Eastern WA, with family and friends. I also like trying new recipes, reading and watching my kids play sports.

How long have you been teaching, and how many years at Crescent Heights?
I have been a para for 6 years and have experienced many different developmental age ranges. I continue to learn each year. One of my favorite experiences was working with students with autism. Prior to having my own kids I worked in the dental field which I loved!

What is the funniest thing a student has ever done in your class?
Working in the classes I have; I have multiple answers for this!

One day that comes to memory is we had our students at recess. We were scheduled for class pictures right after. One of the students got sick on the slide, but before we could stop the others from coming down; they ALL came down and went right thru the “accident”! The other para and I could only smile and help them change into fresh clothes…fast! We both chuckle every time we look at our class picture. Thinking; if you only knew what we all had just experienced! A testament to teamwork!

If you weren’t a teacher, what else would you love to do as your career?
I think I am still trying to figure that out at the age of 41! However; this is my favorite year of being a para. Every day is different!

Tell us one thing you’d love for the families of Crescent Heights to know about you.
Every student means a whole lot to me! I think the world of the school that I work for and the staff at Crescent Heights; they are all a part of the community I live in.
Thanks for all you do for our kiddos, Kelly!
