Teacher Tuesday Profile: Sarah Berkley

This week we are featuring one of our new 5th Grade teachers, Sarah Berkley!  (If you haven’t checked out her classroom decor..you should!  It’s awesome!)   Here is more about Sarah:

What is your name, and what grade/specialty do you teach?
Sarah Berkley, 5th Grade

Tell us a bit about your family.  Do you have kids?  If so, what ages are they?  Do you have pets?Sarah
My children are daughter Elliot (11) and son Alex (4.) My husband Peter is a graphic designer who works at home. (We have our own business, The Art Dept., that specializes in graphic design, marketing and filmmaking. I assist my husband with this business when I can! ) Our two dogs are Blitz, a Berger Picard, and Lucille, a Rough Collie. We also have a grumpy old cat named Miette.

What are your hobbies?  What do you love to do outside of work?
I love gardening, reading, eighties dance parties with my kids, old movies, hiking and traveling. I write fiction when I have the spare creative energy.

How long have you been teaching, and how many years at Crescent Heights?

This is my second year teaching! Before this I was on a replacement contract at Sherman Elementary. Before that, my profession was journalism and I worked as a newspaper reporter and magazine editor in Sonoma, California, where we used to live.

What is the funniest thing a student has ever done in your class?
I had a lot of kids squeal and panic last year after our darkling beetles escaped their enclosure. We couldn’t find them the next morning… until one student lifted up the edge of my area carpet. There they were, all clinging to the bottom of it and scuttling around underneath. There were multiple kids sitting on the carpet, and I’ve never seen anyone move so fast or jump so high in the air. Fortunately we removed the beetles from the carpet and returned them to their enclosure.

If you weren’t a teacher, what else would you love to do as your career?
feel like I would have made a great marine biologist or marine field scientist.

Tell us one thing you’d love for the families of Crescent Heights to know about you.
I love teaching your kids!!

Thanks Sarah!!
